In the sense that they won’t vote the way they mean to. The reason behind it? Human nature and various misinformation campaigns.
About every single person in the world (including myself…) thinks they know everything. When people go to elect MPs for example, they know what party they’ll vote for before they go out the door. Same goes for a referendum… But in this case, only options “YES” and “NO” exist, and the question matters a lot more.
To put it briefly: Traian Băsescu has created a powerful brand with the “Alianţa D.A.” (YES Alliance) during the 2004 elections and the Members of Parliament (all of them, not just the 322), where the people who voted the ballot format (and they just voted it, mind you, others working for them created it).
When they created it… Actually, those that created it were probably stupid bozos with some ideas about what misinformation is all about, and they were from both sides (in favor of and against Traian Băsescu).
Those in favor of Băsescu got the placing of the “NO” as a final conclusion (in the order in which a Romanian passes through the text, namely from top to bottom and from left to right, while the “DA” (YES) answer is located quite uncomfortably, and has to be actively searched).
Those against Băsescu won in the way the question was made so that “DA” (YES) becomes the answer needed to send local El Lider Maximo back home (therefore using the “DA” brand against Băsescu himself).
As far as the misinformation campaigns… I can provide you with a few classic examples:
- disinformation messages/campaigns from those who support Traian Băsescu (let me just name the Romanian Democratic Party [PD], the Romanian Democratic Liberal Party [PLD], and other independent supporters) whom via various messages on forums, blogs, et al, warn “the people” into voting “NO” in order to bring down Băsescu;
- disinformation messages/campaigns from those who do not support Traian Băsescu (the Romanian National Liberal Party [PNL], Social Democratic Party [PSD], Greater Romania Party [PRM], National Democratic Union of Magyars [UDMR], other independent supporters), who send a similar (only pro-Băsescu) message, by advising his supporters to vote “DA” [YES, in favor], making references to the 2004 elections, in order to keep Băsescu as President.
As one who clearly does not support Traian Băsescu, I’m going to provide an example of such a misinformation campaign, which is of course only a “proof of concept”, and has been created solely for the purpose of better explaining the phenomenon and of course not because I want Băsescu out of there and I’m using the same tactics… ![]()
