Why did you unilaterally decide to appoint Mircea Geoană as the Social Democratic Party candidate for Bucharest City Hall, seeing as he was clearly unfit for the position (being Minister of Foreign Affairs) and also didn’t want it?

De ce aţi decis unilateral să îl numiţi pe Mircea Geoană candidat la Primăria Municipiului Bucureşti, în condiţiile în care era clar nepotrivit funcţiei şi nici dânsul nu şi-o dorea?

Extras dintr-un anunţ de la avizier:

Studenţii care au restanţe din anii anteriori trebuie să aducă la secretariat chitanţele aferente taxelor de restantă (20 lei/restanţă).
Intrarea în examen este condiţionată de înscriere şi de dovada plăţii taxei pentru restanţă.

Asta în condiţiile în care “Regulamentul privind Activitatea Profesională a Studenţilor” (pagină arhivată aici), art. 9, lit. d) spune:

La fiecare disciplină, studentul se poate prezenta la examene de cel mult 2 ori gratuit. În cazul în care studentul nu obţine note de promovare după cea de-a doua prezentare poate solicita o singură reexaminare suplimentară cu taxă în condiţiile art. 58 din Legea învăţământului.

Acuma… eu ştiind limba română şi având minime cunoştinţe juridice (nu chiar minime, dar fie) asta-nseamnă că te-ai putut prezenta prima oară gratis când ai făcut cursul, la primul examen şi a doua oară gratis atunci când te-ai înscris la restanţă, iarăşi gratis… Abia după să fie cu bani. Însă dacă eşti tăcut din fire (adică mai tâmp aşa, în accepţiunea mea), le dai banii.

Şi deoarece nu vreau să fiu scârţar trebuie să admit că aşa se întâmplă la această minunată facultate de cu mult dinainte ca decanul ei, Cristian Preda, să devină Consilier Prezidenţial (pagină arhivată aici) al lui El Presidente dar sunt sigur că ştie de aceste politici ale facultăţii.

Din ciclul chestiunilor neplăcute pe care mi-a fost dat să le văd şi experimentez la această facultate aş putea include obligativitatea cererii unui card BCR prin facultate ca parte a înscrierii în an (care s-a anulat după niscaiva scandal făcut de mai mulţi studenţi şi nici un card cerut nu a fost emis până la urmă – aparent cineva [oare cine?] s-a asigurat că Departamentul Juridic al BCR primeşte informaţii clare despre ce şi mai ales cum a dorit să facă Universitatea Bucureşti aceste carduri) şi încă o chestiune hush-hush momentan – până când obţin toate informaţiile necesare, ca apoi să le public – despre diverse metode/maniere de a face bani din educaţie.

PS: Acest articol stă scris în sistem de vreo 3-4 săptămâni. Cum ieri s-a susţinut licenţa şi s-a pierdut orice fel de putere de a face Z-ului viaţa amară, acum s-a apăsat butonul Publică

PPS: Am scrâşnit din dinţi de ură împotriva mea pentru că ţineam acest articol nepublicat. A-mi ţine gura sau blogul închis (chiar şi pentru binele meu) este foarte dificil.

Translated excerpt from a notice on the university billboard:

Students that are registering take exams failed in previous years must provide the secretariat with the receipts for the failed exam reexamination taxes (20 RON/reexamination).
Entrance to the exam is conditioned by registration and proof of payment.

This wile the “Regulations regarding Student Professional Activity” (page archived here), art. 9, letter d) states:

For each discipline, the student may take exams no more than 2 times for free. Should the student fail to obtain a passing grade the second time taking the exam, the student may request a single additional paid reexamination as per the conditions of art 58 of the Education Act.

Now… me knowing Romanian (cause that’s the language these were originally written in) and having minimal legal knowledge (OK, not minimal, but that doesn’t really matter) that means that one could take an exam for free the first time, when one took the course, and take the exam a second time, for free again, when one first registers for a reexamination exam… And after that pay for it. But if you’re the silent type (dumber, from my point of view), you pay up.

And because I don’t want to be an ass I must admit that this is the way the cookie has been crumbling at this wonderful college long before its dean, Cristian Preda, became Presidential Counselor (page archived here) to El Presidente, but I am sure he knows of these department policies.

From the cycle of bad stuff that I was “lucky enough” to witness studying here, I could include the mandatory requesting of a debit card from the Romanian Commercial Bank as part of academic year registration (which was canceled only after quite a number of students raised up a shit-storm and in the end no requested card – because most students requested it – was ever issued – apparently someone [I wonder who] made sure that the Legal Department of the Romanian Commercial Bank received clear information about what and most specifically how the University of Bucharest went about these cards) and one more thing which I’m keeping under wraps right now – till I get all the necessary information and publish everything – about the various ways and means of making a (slightly illegal or at least unethical) buck from education.

PS: This article was written in this blog about 3-4 weeks ago. Seeing as yesterday was the day when the final exams were held and the Political Science Department lost any and all power of making Z’s life hard, Z pressed Publish

PPS: I hated myself for keeping this article unpublished. Keeping my mouth or my blog silent (even for my own sake) is so difficult.

My non-partisan opinion (although I’m a self-declared fan of the Intact media group he owns through his daughters and disenchanted to say the least of the Realitatea group) is that he is a bit of both.

Ştefan Alexandru Iordache’s opinion however, who of course has no political interests or partisanships
and who was expressed his opinion on this site is a typical Democratic Party member with inside information opinion.

I’m quoting him below (however, changing the order in which he presents those invoices – to be chronological – and removing certain qualifications he makes about Dan Voiculescu):

Due to the mismanagement of state owned company Hidroelectrica S.A., it has ended up purchasing energy from one of the “wise guys” it supplies energy to, namely Grupul Industrial Voiculescu şi Compania (GRIVCO) S.A., registered with the Trade Registry under no. J40/3766/1991, C.U.I. 1569870, headquartered in Bucharest, Sector 1, Str. Gârlei nr. 1B, account no. RO67RNCB5010000200090001 opened with B.C.R. Sector 1. Grupului Industrial Voiculescu şi Compania (GRIVCO) S.A. share capital: RON 6.480.000.

It is positively scandalous how the management of Hidroelectrica S.A. continues to loot state money, the money of all the generations that contributed through the taes they paid in accumulating the financial resources that made it possible to build the large hydro-electric power plants!!!

Gentlemen of the National Anti-Corruption Department, General Attorney’s Office and Romanian Intelligence Service, come back and investigate Hidroelectrica S.A., because ever since your last visit, when you picked up some of the contracts with the “wise guys”, the management of this state owned company is carrying on with these activities although it is already under criminal investigation for the same kind of actions.

Opinia mea de neafiliat (deşi sunt fan declarat al grupului de presă Intact şi scârbit enorm de pupinbăseii de la Realitatea) este că un pic din amândouă.

Opinia lui Ştefan Alexandru Iordache însă, care nu are nici un interes sau vreo coloratură politică
şi care şi-a exprimat opinia pe acest site este una tipică de PD-ist cu informaţii din interior.

Mai jos îl citez pe dânsul (adăugând însă diacritice, schimbând ordinea prezentării facturilor – pentru a se conforma cronologic cu ordinea de emitere – şi scoţând anumite calificative):

If you’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.2+ and use the same latin1 database, which has nothing to do with UTF-8 (and you want UTF-8 because it’s good for diacritics and Chinese and everything), it’s high time you converted your database.
Seeing as I too finally did it (a few hours ago), I decided to write this simple HOWTO, mostly for people that don’t actively search for how to make this conversion happen but would need it (it’s based on this HOWTO from WordPress).

Requirements:
- WordPress 2.2+
- The SiteUnavailable plugin (to stave off any chance that your visitors add content to your database while you’re converting it) (version 1.0 archived here)
- The UTF-8 Database Converter plugin (which will be doing the conversion per se) (version 2.0.1 archived here)

Steps:

1. Backup your database.

2. Check your backup.

3. Install the two plugins mentioned above (following the installation instructions for each of them – basically uploading them to wp-content/plugins/).

4. Activate SiteUnavailable. From that point on any visitor coming to your site will see a maintenance page (which can be configured by editing the plugin file).

5. Edit wp-config.php from your WordPress root folder by adding the following 2 lines:

define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8');
define('DB_COLLATE', '');

You can do this by downloading wp-config.php to your computer, using any FTP client such as FileZilla, editing the file in Wordpad (or whatever text editor you’d like), and adding the lines above anywhere between <?php and ?>, saving the file and then uploading it to the server, overwriting the old file.

6. Activate the UTF-8 Database Converter plugin.

7. Go to the UTF-8 Database Converter page, which is available in the Plugins menu.

8. Guess

9. Deactivate UTF-8 Database Converter and SiteUnavailable from the Plugins menu.

10. Check your site. If all is well you should see no difference whatsoever. On the other hand, if you check your database using phpMyAdmin for example, you’ll see that everything has now been neatly converted to UTF-8.

PS: You can now delete the plugins, of course. You certainly won’t be needing UTF-8 Database Converter anymore (except if you want to use a single WordPress install to convert other databases by just changing wp-config.php settings but I doubt there will be that many sickos out there ) and SiteUnavailable… who knows?

Dacă ai trecut la WordPress 2.2+ şi ai rămas cu baza de date veche, care este de fapt latin1 şi nu are nimic UTF-8 (şi chiar vrei UTF-8 pentru că face bine la toate diacriticele astea şi poate stoca inclusiv chineză ca lumea), ar fi momentul să treci la conversie.
Având în vedere că în sfârşit am făcut-o şi eu (acum vreo câteva ore), am zis să scriu un HOWTO simplu, în română, pentru cei care nu caută în mod activ să facă această conversie dar ar avea nevoie (este bazat pe acest HOWTO de la WordPress).

Cerinţe:
- WordPress 2.2+
- Plugin-ul SiteUnavailable (pentru a bloca orice posibilitate ca vizitatorii tăi să adauge conţinut la baza de date în timp ce faci conversia) (versiunea 1.0 arhivată local)
- Plugin-ul UTF-8 Database Converter (care va face conversia propriu-zisă) (versiunea 2.0.1 arhivată local)

Paşi:

1. Îţi faci un backup la baza de date.

2. Îl verifici.

3. Instalezi cele două plugin-uri menţionate mai sus (urmând instrucţiunile de instalare disponibile pentru fiecare – adică upload în folderul wp-content/plugins/).

4. Activezi plugin-ul SiteUnavailable. Din acel moment, oricine intră pe pagina ta, va vedea o pagină de mentenanţă (configurabilă, editând fişierul plugin-ului).

5. Editezi fişierul wp-config.php din directorul rădăcină al WordPress-ului tău şi adaugi următoarele 2 rânduri:

define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8');
define('DB_COLLATE', '');

Poţi face asta descărcând fişierul wp-config.php pe computerul tău, utilizând orice client de FTP, cum ar fi FileZilla, editând fişierul în Wordpad (sau ce editor de text vrei tu), şi adăugând rândurile de mai sus oriunde între <?php şi ?>, salvând fişierul şi apoi urcându-l înapoi pe server, scriind peste fişierul vechi.

6. Activezi plugin-ul UTF-8 Database Converter.

7. Intri pe pagina plugin-ului UTF-8 Database Converter, disponibilă din meniul Plugin-uri.

8. Ghici

9. Dezactivezi plugin-urile UTF-8 Database Converter şi SiteUnavailable din meniul plugin-uri.

10. Intri pe site. Dacă totul este bine, ar trebui să observi nici o diferenţă (da, sunt împotriva dublei negaţii). În schimb, dacă vei verifica baza de date folosind phpMyAdmin spre exemplu, vei vedea că totul a devenit UTF-8.

PS: Acum poţi şterge plugin-urile, desigur. De UTF-8 Database Converter în mod cert nu vei mai avea nevoie (exceptând situaţia în care vrei cu o singură instalare de WordPress să converteşti şi alte baze de date schimbând doar setările din wp-config.php însă sunt aproape sigur că nu vor fi mulţi asemenea bolnavi) iar de SiteUnavailable… cine ştie?
