I’m a nationalist only in the American sense (the good one!). When I was a kid going to school in the States I would say the pledge of allegiance every morning, and only then my classmates and I would go on with our schooling. We had no church symbols in schools (like the not so esteemed Mr. Becali wants and like, probably, the self appointed of G-d, Băsescu will want) and in a single class we were children of all religions and all colors.
This post is related only to the release of Andrei Ivanţoc from the so-called Transnistria and with a slight case of sickness to the stomach caused by Romanian politics.
I’m sorry to have to say it but… you see… only ultra-nationalist extremist Corneliu Vadim Tudor has ever done something for the release of these people. The various governments of Romania… are just too busy doing anything else… fear of Russia is great, lack of interest is phenomenal… public servants play with paper (I’m sorry… cook memorandums on their laser printers) which they pass around to get signed, then photocopy, archive in triplicate, lose, find, and so on and so forth.
To be brief: George Ilaşcu was released when he was released because he had been appointed a European MP (with observer status, like all Romanian European MPs had back then) by the Greater Romania Party (which kind of felt the pain of giving such a position away to someone who was in prison, because they were not the party-state) and Vadim, in the style we have become accustomed to, was nice enough to at one time make public a discussion he had with Lord Robinson (if I’m not mistaking) which he quoted to have said at a certain point “if they won’t release him… we’ll go in and get him out”.
I’m sorry about Romania’s foreign policy as regards Romanians. I personally have no trust that if I were to go to… Nigeria for example… and something bad would happen to me, the Romanian state would help me in any way. I am not a senator’s kid and/or a journalist… so I’m pretty sure my name would be on page 8/10/123 and that through an error the memo regarding me would end up somewhere with the “Romanians from everywhere” program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Disgustedly yours,
